Man pleads guilty after hijacking bus and injuring police officers on Derby Road

The incident occured outside Queen’s Medical Centre

A man has pleaded guilty to trying to hijack a bus and injuring four police officers on Derby Road, Lenton.

The man who has been identified as Earl Haye, grabbed the steering wheel of a moving bus just outside Queen’s Medical Centre at 7.15am on Monday 1st November last year.

Haye was removed from a bus by an off-duty police sergeant, Nottinghamshire Police told BBC news, after shouting and swearing at the driver. He then boarded a second bus soon after, putting both hands on the wheel of the vehicle and attempting to steer it.

Haye then got off the bus, and ran into incoming traffic on Derby Road, near Queen’s Medical Centre. Whilst in the traffic, he attempted to get into a woman’s car, and jumped onto a Peugeot 107, punching and smashing the windscreens, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Police Sargent Whitt fought to restrain Haye, suffering a torn ligament in his finger in the process, whilst he climbed into the back of another passing car before being pulled out by another three police officers. Whilst Haye was being arrested, he spat at a police officer, and bit the arms of two others.

This Tuesday the 49-year-old man was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to an 18 month suspended jail sentence. In a hearing in November at Nottingham Magistrates court, the perpetrator admitted to three charges of assault by beating an emergency worker, and one count of common assault of an emergency worker.

Hayes also plead guilty to causing danger by causing items to be on a road, and two counts of criminal damage to property. Alongside the prison term Haye was also charged with 30 days of rehabilitation activity and a victim surcharge of £156.

In a statement made to BBC News, Sargent Whitt said: “Something that will stay in my mind for longer than the physical pain is the genuine looks of terror in the faces of members of the public, who by no fault of their own, were involved and forced to watch Haye’s rampage

“I’m just glad I was in a position to intervene and help prevent a very serious incident.”
