More LCR refurbs announced

New lights and ventilation, same old sticky floors

The Union’s management committee have announced the second phase of Union House’s refurbishment has been given the go-ahead.

As we reported last month, the LCR refurb is to include gender-neutral toilets with the Blue and Red bar operating separately.

On top of the creation of Unio (which is set to have a reshuffle) and the new staff office upstairs in the Hive (which will have additional workstations), there will be more changes around campus.

Most importantly, we will finally be getting a refreshed LCR.

The lighting, flooring, ventilation and sound will all be improved – so less sweaty, sticky floors hopefully.

There will also be a brand new entrance, cloakroom and a refurbished serving space.

The Hive will also have improved décor and flooring, Persian rugs perhaps?

The beloved cloakroom

We announced at the end of summer that due to a grant awarded by the UEA Alumni Fund, a temporary new space was given to the media societies along with some flashy new equipment.

A new, permanent Student Media Centre is in the process of being built and will be ready for September 2015.

The current grad bar and media centre

A new Graduate Centre will be equipped with a refurbished café bar, ‘social learning lounge’, and a bookable space for Graduate Students.

As well as this a suite of bookable student activity rooms with IT and kitchen facilities will also be available for all student groups.

The work will be complete by Friday, 4th September, ready for new students to arrive – sorry third years.

As a result of the building work and asbestos removal (ew), there will be some closures.

The Level 1 Grad Bar and Union Store will be shut from Friday April 3rd.

The Level 1 Student Media Centre, Snooker, Finance and Housing offices will be closed as of Friday April 17th.

Reception and the Backstage area will close on Friday June 12th.

The Level 0 LCR Entrance and the LCR toilets will be shut from Friday July 24th, meaning they will be closed during Grad Week.

For those of you wondering where some of that £9000 a year is going, let’s hope the new LCR toilets are to your standards.
