Three injured in city centre bus crash

Schoolchildren were “thrown across” the bus

Three people were injured after a bus crashed into scaffolding near Norwich Bus Station last night.

The bus – an X2 to Lowestoft – was pulling out of the bus station on Queen’s Road when it collided with another vehicle, causing it to crash into scaffolding on a building nearby.

The accident, which involved three other vehicles, occurred just before 4pm.

Queen’s Road was closed while the situation was dealt with by emergency services, resulting in severe traffic delays.

St Stephen’s roundabout was also briefly closed, but was reopened by 6pm.

Policemen directed pedestrians to the other side of the street and placed traffic on diversion.

A video posted on YouTube shows the devastation caused by the crash, including a black car with a crumpled rear end and a silver car with a dented fender.

Among those injured was a driver of one of the impacted cars, who was treated by paramedics at the scene.

A disabled woman is also believed to have been injured while on board the bus.

Schoolchildren travelling on the X2 described one of their friends being “thrown across” the bus due to the impact.

No UEA students are known to have been involved.

A spokesman for First Eastern Counties Buses said: “We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a crash at around 4pm today in Queen’s Road, Norwich.

“We are currently working with the police and have launched an internal investigation.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
