Livewire Awards – the results!

Forget the Billboard Awards and the British Soap Awards, it’s the Livewire Awards!


On Thursday May 22nd Livewire 1350 held its annual ‘Livewire Awards’ in the LCR. It was a chance for the society to hear from industry experts (and drink alcohol) while giving out some awards, recognising UEA’s radio talent as well as awarding a selection of the brave individuals who took part in this year’s Jailbreak.

The general Livewire Awards and winners were as follows:

Best Interview – Jay Lawrence interviewing The 1975

Best Feature – ‘Lovewire’ during the SRA Chart Show

Best Factual Show – The News with Philippa Sims

Best Specialist Show – Maddie’s Tea Party

Best Entertainment Show – Sam Day & Bilal

Best Singing in a Charity Single – Gilbert Macnaughton

Best Newcomer – Chris Paton

Best Female – Anita Ncube

Best Male (presented by Capital FM DJ & TV Presenter, Christian Williams) – Sam Day

Producer of the Year – Lizzi Hill

Online Writer of the Year – Luke Jones/Chris Paton

Best Innuendo – Gilbert Macnaughton for ‘It’s sort of long & purple’ from ‘Lovewire’

Livewire have had a great year this year, with the Union Council voting in favour for the motion to allow Livewire to be broadcasted within the Hive and more recently announcing it had secured £50,000 to develop a brand new Student Media Centre.

The money designated to Livewire will contribute towards: “[Creating] a fully functional and modern radio station with an editing suite to produce accessible content.”

The Tab spoke to Jay Lawrence, Livewire’s Studio Manager and all-round man in charge about the additional funding: “With the addition of new studios in the foreseeable future and brand new industry standard equipment next year, Livewire is going to go from strength to strength. It is a very exciting time to be a first year in Livewire at the moment, and I would like to wish the best of luck to next year’s Station Manager Oliver Sanham who I’m sure will do a great job.”

The station have organised, covered and provided around-the-clock coverage on some great events this year enjoyed by the student body such as Derby Day and Jailbreak, with the latter raising almost £15,000 for Wateraid.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, Livewire alumnus and UEA’s claim to fame Greg James gave a message at the Awards via video and continued to spread the ‘Livewire Love’ via Twitter.

Jay summed up the awards and also thanked this year’s members and listeners: “This year has been undoubtedly fantastic for Livewire where we have increased both membership and listenership considerably. The Livewire Awards is a night to celebrate all that we have done throughout the year.

“It was a truly memorable night and I do not think it could have been more enjoyable. I would like to say a big well done to all the winners and nominees, but also to everybody else who has made this year’s Livewire team amazing.”

Livewire is still on-air during exam period until their Final Countdown taking place on Sunday June 1st which will be the last day of broadcasting of this academic year. The schedule will be split into 15 minute slots where everyone has a chance on air to bid farewell. You can listen live online.
