Roll On Next Semester!

The Tab’s top 5 reasons why we should all look forward to next term.

The Christmas break is here. For final year students, the end of the Autumn Semester means the start of their last term at UEA, and the countdown to the dreaded graduation. For freshers and second years that have been partying hard, the chance to ‘detox’ may be welcome, but life back home can seem a bit quiet compared to university.

But do not fear fellow students. We shouldn’t be sad about the end of Semester one, Semester two is just around the corner! The Tab gives you five reasons to look forward to next term:
1) The sun is on its way (hopefully). With hours spent by the lake, impromptu games of rounders and barbeques galore and no need to pay for the cloakroom on every night out, a change in the weather must surely be welcome! Afternoons in The Square are a must next term. For those of you new to UEA, you’ll soon see that the first peek of sun sees The Square packed with students drinking smoothies form the Hive or grabbing a cheeky Pimm’s from the pub.

The freshers scored a rounder.

2) A great semester for you musical lovers, Minotaur Theatre Company’s annual charity night at the musicals Cabaret and Drama Society’s Reefer Madness are week 6 and 7 next term. Usually sell out shows, look out for info on both in The Tab’s culture section next semester.

The cast of last year’s ‘Cabaret’.

3) Derby Day. UEA and the University of Essex compete for sporting glory. This annual event held in March is hosted by UEA this year, so we all get to watch!  Old rivals meet across a variety of sports from Dance to Football. The winner is decided, and then we all have a cracking night at the LCR to celebrate/ commiserate/ rant about the bias ref.

4) St Patrick’s Day 17th March- the day that everybody seems to have a claim to being Irish. St Paddy’s at uni is mad. ‘Hard core’ students will start drinking before mid-day whilst the light weights among us venture to the Square late afternoon to soak up the atmosphere before some charity entertainment in the Blue Bar. Last year included the (now ex) UEA rugby team Full Monty and a student version of popular show Take Me Out. Students who make it to 11pm tend to head to the LCR or town.

5) Pimp my Barrow. It’s a shame we have to wait right till the summer for this one, but PMB gives you the motivation to get through those exams! You decorate a wheel barrow, dress up in the most extravagant fancy dress and go on a pub crawl. And the entry money goes to charity- what’s not to love?!

With all these events, a naked sports calendar, a fashion show and a dance show to look forward to, the list of reasons to look forward to next semester goes on and on! Look out for updates on The Tab about all of the above. Enjoy Christmas, and remember, the best of UEA is yet to come.
