Get ready for Murder on Zidane’s Floor

Tom Stevens introduces us to a new team in UEA’s Sunday 6-a-side football league

Ian Wright did not become a professional until he was 21, whilst Miroslav Klose was a part-time builder until he was 20.

These are but two examples of players who never gave up hope of becoming professional footballers and are often cited as role models for young amateur footballers.

However, it is time for me to face the truth. It is looking increasingly unlikely that my dream of signing a multimillion pound contract with Barcelona is going to happen.

I am sure that there are many other students at UEA in the same predicament as me. It is always a slightly depressing moment when you see someone younger than yourself get called up into the England squad, and for some people, this results in them giving up on their dream altogether.

However, for those who still maintain the dream of one day representing your country, there is a gleam of hope right here on our beloved campus. The UEA Sunday 6-a-side league.

With more small sized pitches than anywhere in East Anglia, the Sportspark must surely be the first place Premier League scouts will look for young and upcoming talent.

With this in mind, my friends and I decided to set up our own team and thus, Murder On Zidane’s Floor FC was formed.

It hasn’t always been fun and games mind you. Last season we suffered the heartbreak of being relegated into the second tier of the Sunday league. It was emotional, but the team have come back stronger and better this year and currently sit in 2nd place in the Championship.

Second year Business Management student Josh O’Brien and manager of Murder on Zidane’s Floor FC is a big supporter of the league and the opportunities it offers students.

“I think it’s a great way for students to carry on playing football competitively week in and week out” he said. “Too often, people come to university and fail to seize the opportunities offered.”

“People are often put off by the commitment required to play for an 11-a-side team and I think 6-a-side offers a great platform for players to showcase their talent and enjoy the beautiful game.”

The Sunday night league runs from 5pm until 8pm every week and costs £15 per match. It is run by the Norfolk FA and interested teams should call Norfolk County FA on 01603 748944, email [email protected] or pick up an application form from the Sportspark reception.

It is a fantastic way to continue playing the sport you love and who knows, if you play well, you may well receive a phone call from Mr. Hodgson in the future.
