Why not take up a sport this year?

If you want to mark your first year with some memorable moments, joining a Sport club will provide this.

In the wake of an inspiring Olympic Games, Freshers’ might want to look at the Sports Mart, this Wednesday. UEA has a host of lesser known, and worldwide sports, with strong followings, not least American Football.

The UEA Pirates have been stealing headlines after an impressive campaign last year. And with the Rugby situation a little on the touchy side, American Football can provide a competitive alternative.

Like the look of the Volleyball this summer? The UEA Volleyball team will get you into shape, advertising four training sessions a week. Or perhaps could try your hand at Archery? With the equipment provided, it’s the perfect platform for seasoned pros, as well as beginners.

All of the sports encourage newcomers, so any painful memories of being picked last in the playground can be forgotten.

An up and coming sport, proving very popular here at UEA, is Korfball. Still relatively unknown to most, the sport involves two teams, with eight players, split into four females and four males. Once in possession, a player cannot move with the ball, meaning a reliance on teamwork and tactics.

With different playing zones, a football-like ball and frequent position changes, it has a bit of everything. A rare mixed gender sport, it offers a different dynamic, socially, and in terms of playing alongside the opposite gender. The team will be keen to recruit, and if you’re open to trying something new, with an emphasis on teamwork, then Korfball is one you should look out for.

If Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah have successfully convinced you to run off all that excess alcohol, then look into joining the Athletics Club. Welcome to anyone, regardless of ability, there are no trials. So if you’re simply looking to keep fit, have a weekly catch up with friends, whilst burning calories, or want to compete competitively, this is the ideal place.

There are a variety of water sports out there also. The Sportspark boasts a top of the range swimming pool, and further afield you can join Sailing and Kayaking clubs. You can even try your hand at Waterpolo, sure to be an entertaining and unique experience.

the baseball club – always open to new members

If you’re looking for a medieval twist, Fencing is the closest you will get but the Butterfly Boxing Club (the sport of Kings) runs a close second.

If you join a club or team, you need to buy a SAM card (Sport Association Membership). This is a contribution to the union, helping to fund all the sports, and cover you for insurance. Once this is paid, you are free to take part in every single sport.

So get down to the Sport Mart this Wednesday, and get involved. You’re never going to forget scoring the last gasp point against Essex at Derby Day, are you?
