Which is better: school or university?

Matt Baron gives his take on the timeless debate

There’s a common question asked amongst university pre drinks and that is, “what’s better, school or university?”

You actually have to do some work at uni

Now both have their pros and cons but if you had to choose where to be right now in 2014, where would you be?

Now we all love university for the social life, (that’s the main reason most of us signed up), there’s nothing better than dragging all your flatmates out of their rooms and handing everyone a jagerbomb or tequila shot, heading to town and meeting new people. This part of uni has to be the time of your life however the unfortunate reality is that we do have a lot of hard work such as assignments and the main one, trying to pursue a future career.

This only happens at uni

Back at school there was no drinking (unless you were one of those people sitting at the back of the P.E field drinking frosty jacks) but every day was a great laugh. Walking into the classroom and taking a paper airplane to the eye from your best mate pissing himself laughing in the corner, joking on all day at the back of the class- and the work, at the time seemed like a mammoth task, but now we would give anything to read Romeo and Juliet instead of writing a dissertation.

The highlight of anyone’s school days, apart from when the P.E teacher told you to go play whatever sport you want, was that amazing moment when the ‘supply teacher’ would walk in. Everyone knew, even the teacher, that no work was getting done that lesson and it became break time indoors for the next hour while a poor old women would timidly tell everyone to be quiet. But that’s all just a thing of the past now.

The last day of school was always magical, especially when you’re Harry Potter.

School days will always be some of the most treasured memories, but university has created some serious competition between which one is our favourite. Although in our school days we were never searching the cupboards for the last can of Tesco value beans or doing the freshers sniff test to determine if it was time to wash our clothes, University allows students to move away from home, become independent, meet new people, have some amazing nights out and work towards a career we have always wanted.

In the battle of School vs. University I believe both are winners in our mind, but I’d have to give the edge to university.

Who wouldn’t enjoy this?

At school I would have never been able to walk into my room after a long night of drinking, be sick all over and then not have to worry about getting a rant in the morning. Sweet independence.
