Police believe he got on a 142 Magic Bus at 10pm at the university, and got off near Withington library.

But just before midnight, after arriving home, he told one of his housemates to that he’d been assaulted in a takeaway.

He was later taken to hospital in an ambulance, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

“We are trying to build up a full picture of the student’s movements before he arrived at home ” said DI David Turner, from Greater Manchester Police.

“Attacks such as this are extremely rare and we are working to identify the individual/s responsible”, he added.
