Applications for The Tab Leeds’ editorial team are now open
We’re recruiting for Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor and Social Media Editor
The Tab Leeds is now recruiting for our 2022/23 academic year editorial team, with applications now open!
From a Leeds Uni student being spat at and racially abused whilst in the Royal Park pub to Beckett introducing a degree in TikTok and Police officers telling students that ‘they had keys to access their bedrooms,’ The Tab Leeds breaks the biggest stories on campus.
The positions available are Editor-in-Chief, News Editor, Features Editor and Social Media Editor. We welcome applications from all students, the only requirement is that you are a student at either University of Leeds or Leeds Beckett University.
If you feel like journalism isn’t typically accessible for people from your background, please do apply. You will have training from experienced editors to get you up and running.
These are editorial positions so some journalistic experience would help. If you have your own blog or have written for a different publication in the past and are looking to step up your experience, you should definitely apply.
Editor in Chief
As editor-in-chief, you will be responsible for overseeing every article published by The Tab Leeds’ and be responsible for leading the team on all the latest news and stories on campus. You can even use this as an excuse to go to Fruity every week for a month as a fourth year.
You will work with the section editors to ensure everyone in the team is writing something and keeping on top of all the latest news happening on campus. The amount of opportunities are endless, from a press event at Shuffle, as well as press tickets to the Leeds RAG Fashion Show 2022.
You will also write news and feature stories, as well as receive individual training on how to manage your team to produce the best articles possible. You will be the main point of contact with The Tab HQ Team.
The right person for this role is someone who is personable, friendly, approachable and has good leadership skills as you will spend a lot of time communicating and motivating not only your editorial team but your team of writers. These skills are also invaluable for recruiting new writers.
News Editor
You will be responsible for finding out all the spiciest scoops like when three Leeds Uni Men’s Football Club members suspended after a feminist exhibition was vandalised.
It’s key to keep up-to-date on Leeds’ news, from protests on campus to major announcements from the university. It is your responsibility as news editor know a good story when you see one.
You will also support the Editor in Chief in editing articles and writing every week, coming up with pitches and article commissions and supporting writers. The roles of section editors are not black and white and you may also be expected to regularly write and edit Features articles, not just News.
Features Editor
This role is for anyone who wants to take charge on The Tab Leeds’ great feature pieces. You’ll be responsible for writing and editing the iconic feature pieces for the team that make The Tab Leeds as great as it is. You might even get to try every single Bakery 164 sandwich like we did!
You will be working on pieces that cover current opinions, fun guides and witty commentary on campus life, you will also oversee the quizzes, opinion pieces, guides and other fun stories that we write. Rating outfits on campus, or arguing which Leeds club is better – as Features Editor you’ll have a keen interest in everything relevant and relatable to Leeds students.
It is vital you know what is relevant, interesting and funny to the specific student audience we have in Leeds.
Social Media Editor
Your job will be to manage The Tab Leeds’ ever growing social media channels across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Your responsibilities will include advertising our articles, posting regular daily content on our stories, creating and sharing memes, growing our audience and keeping our followers engaged.
You must also be comfortable being in front of the camera to create innovative content for our recently launched TikTok page.
This is a great position to apply for if you want to gain experience in running social media channels.
