Our uni have made nearly £3 million in library fines since 2005

They’ll make 100k in library fines this year alone

Since the beginning of 2005 Leeds University have made a massive £2,851,616 – that’s an average of £316,846 a year just on library fines.

And it’s anticipated that it will collect around £100k in library fines this year alone.

This comes after a recent change in policy, where fines for late items were removed.

Now, the library fines for requested items that are returned late.

The money raised in fines is said to go towards “additional resources” and the “development of services”.

French & Linguistics fourth year Gaby Haugh was unfortunate enough to experience the hard-hitting effects of the library fining system.

She said: “I wasn’t allowed to take out any more books over the exam period because I’d reached the £30 threshold.

“This was before my next instalment of Student Loan too. What’s a girl to do?”

As much as £100k this year seems, it could be worse. In 2011/2012 academic year, Uni rinsed us dry collecting a grand total of £350,514 in fines.

Nice.
