Vote for your bartender of the semester

We know they’re good, but who’s the best?

After dealing with your chunder, rudeness and tears, Aber’s bar staff still manage to flash their best smile and soldier heroically on.

They may have their moment in the sun but, really, who’s been the best of the best this semester?

Mad Friday awaits at the end of this week, and only then can these brave souls even think of going home. So bring a little Christmas cheer into their lives by rewarding the familiar face with your vote.

They make all of this possible

Orla from Wiff-Waff

Could so with a stool there, right Orla?

Third year Geography student Orla is one of our winners from Wales’s only ping-pong bar, Wiff Waff. She is only short and has struggles reaching the taps, but what she lacks in height she more than makes up for in bar-tending prowess. She claims that “Wiff Waff is the best bar in Aberystwyth” and then that would surely make her the best bartender in Aber?

If there was one thing she hated though, we learnt that it’s that “Pervy old men are just the worst.” As well as this she doesn’t like it when people toss their balls around (their for ping pong guys, not catch).

“Does drinking count as a hobby? I guess as a student it does, although it’s more of a personality than a hobby.” Orla, 2015.

Morgan from Academy

He takes his job very seriously

Astrophysics grad Morgan is one of the heroes behind the bar that will serve you your Cheapy Vimto no matter how wasted you are or how busy the crowd in Aber’s one and only Academy.

A keen surfer, Morgan believes that you’re all wasting your money on nights out anyway, “being the sober one actually can be better at times. You can still socialise while making money rather than rinsing your wallet and having a hangover the next day.”

“It sometimes does make you want to go out afterwards though – even if it means having to catch up.”

Gaz K-B from Harry’s Bar

Rock the Gaz Bar

The very first winner of our prestigious award, Gaz wants you to vote him number one of the semester for all his amazing work in Harry’s. Second year Zoology student K-B is a man with an interesting name, and he is a huge hit with ladies and a bit of a BNOC on a night out.

K-B is a real hero of the people and believes that The best thing about being a barman is getting people, erm, socially lubricated and just watching people have a great night.”

Bar manager of Harry’s, Ellie, agreed with what we already knew: “K-B is brilliant, the ladies love him and that’s why I keep him round.”

Nichola from The Angel

Now that is a well stocked bar, nice work Nichola

South Welsh and proud, Nichola is a graduate of law and manages the Angel. Notorious among students for being the better alternative to Yokos on a Vodka Tuesday if you fancy being able to chat and sit down, The Angel gets its fair share of crazy busy shifts and Nichola is there to make sure all always goes smoothly.

Dealing with the creepers is hard behind a bar with no escape, and Nichola told us of her favourite attempt: “One guy genuinely once said to me ‘can I get a shot of you poured over ice’ and I almost just spat my drink in his face laughing.”

Nichola loves a good night out with a Honey JD on ice in Pier over Yokos every time “because it’s less sweaty… besides you’ve gotta love a bit Pier charts ‘n’ cheese.”

Reece from The Cambrian

Cocktail master

Hailing from southern Dorset’s Weymouth, 23 year old Reece is a third year Sports Science student who does amazing work from behind the bar in Cambrian. As a master blender of 200 of Cambrian’s 600 cocktails, Reece understands how to serve quickly and make great relationships with everyone who comes through the doors.

“I love my job – it’s great. Everybody comes in here, all the societies, all the sports and they’re all great people. Working here means I get to meet everybody in town while working with a really great team.”

When not working Reece is a party man and reckons that his best party trick depends on whether he’s drunk or not, “if I’m drunk I can set fire to a shot inside my mouth which most people find quite cool. If I’m sober my party trick is that I can flirt sometimes.”
