Bartender of the week

He can set fire to a shot inside his mouth

Third year Reese studies Sports Science while working as a barman at the Cambrian Hotel. For the next seven days, the 23-year-old from Weymouth is also our bartender of the week.

Cambrian is famous for its huge range of drinks including 600 cocktails and Reese is the master blender of over 200 of the concoction – including the infamous Deathstar.

Cocktail master

After claiming this weeks’ prestigious title, Reese told The Tab: “I love my job – it’s great. Everybody comes in here, all the societies, all the sports and they’re all great people. Working here means I get to meet everybody in town while working with a really great team.

“Cambrian is the best pub in Aberystywth, I’d rather spend a whole night here than go to a club like Yokos. You don’t have to be pissed to come in here; this was my favourite drinking spot in my first year and I never left.

“We get loads of crazy things happening here, wedding proposals, people dancing on the tables, birthday parties necking dirty pints – as long as you don’t break anything you can do whatever you want here.”

Just some of Cambrian’s wacky range of cocktails

The worst thing that’s happened to Reese on a shift involved some drunk people being violent.

He said: “Some twats tipped over the pool table on my shift, breaking it and left us all to pick up the pieces – that was pretty shit. But otherwise it’s pretty chilled out in here, even when it’s busy.”

The best thing about being a bartender in Cambrian is “getting ladies’ numbers. All the staff who work here get numbers from people, for some reason women seem to be attracted to sober guys and vice versa.”

Reece also has two favourite party tricks: “If I’m drunk I can set fire to a shot inside my mouth which most people find quite cool. If I’m sober my party trick is that I can flirt sometimes.”

Pulling the pints

He added: “I reckon I can make about 200 drinks from the top of my head, but mainly just the regular ones – it doesn’t help that we add new cocktails almost every day. I probably hate making The Wall the most because it’s four pints and I always forget what is in them because its quite a rare drink to be ordered.”

Don’t order The Wall when Reese is on the bar

And if you want to impress Reese next time you’re out you just have to remember your manners.

“My perfect costumers are the ones who say please and thank you. There is nothing worse than a demanding, drunk costumer who doesn’t ask nicely. If you point or click at me you don’t get served – simple as that.”
