Aberystwyth wins ‘Great Town’ award

We already know we’re at the best university, but now we’re officially a “great town” too.

The Academy of Urbanism Awards have described our seaside haven as a “successful resort” – despite its “apparent disadvantages”.

Aber picked up the best town award following its resilience after last year’s devastating floods.

Tim Challans of the Urbanism Awards said: “We were very impressed with how Aberystwyth defies all the apparent disadvantages of its isolated location to be a successful seaside resort and popular university town.”

We’re the best

The panel were particularly impressed with Aberystwyth’s resilience in the face of its recent storms.

Tim said: “The town’s resilience in recovering from the winter storms exemplifies how its people are passionate about their home.”

Aber was up against lots of towns including Bury, West Sussex and Beverley, East Yorkshire.

But then again, how many small towns in the middle of nowhere do you know with over 50 pubs? There was no competiton.
