Rugby sevens begins this year

Didn’t quite make the cut for the rugby team? Now you can get involved, even if you’re no pro

The rugby sevens has launched this year for the first time, but it’s only for guys.

Once a year on May Bank Holiday, the tournament brings together players of all standards who try to tackle their way to victory.

You can register a team of 20 players for just £230- £11.50 per person- and you don’t have to be Shane Williams to get involved.

The league’s President, Dimitar Paskalev, said: “We held a couple of meetings and agreed the mission of our new club – to provide a safe and secure environment for people of all abilities to enjoy the beautiful game of rugby.

“We would like to offer students the opportunity to enjoy the game of rugby the way it was intended by bringing the social aspect of it forward, encouraging people to play together, strengthen old bonds and make new friends.”

Richard Murray, a third year Human Geography student said: “I played in the sevens tournament for the first time this year and had major withdrawal once the weekend was over.

“I can’t wait to join the league and play throughout the year.”

The tournament is only available for guys, but there are plans to launch a women’s league next year.
