Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me tells a ‘cautionary tale’ about the pop culture icon

‘I really feel like she is telling her own story in her own words’

Netflix’s latest documentary tells the story of former American model Anna Nicole Smith. She was the pop culture icon in the 90s and producers hope the documentary will allow viewers “to understand that Anna Nicole was a complex woman”.

Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know me is available to watch now and it has been described as “a cautionary tale about how the desire for the American dream can swallow you up and spit you out, blurring yourself self image and make you lose sight of your authentic self”.

What is the true story of Anna Nicole Smith?

The Netflix documentary includes “never-before-seen footage, home movies and interviews”, allowing viewers to see Anna Nicole for who she really was and how she navigated her childhood.

Anna was a model, actress and television personality in the 90s and went on to model for the likes of H&M, Guess and Heatherette.

“I feel like many previous books and films about Anna Nicole twisted her narrative, so I felt fortunate to have access to a wealth of audio and TV interviews including personal phone calls that involved Anna Nicole, sais director Ursula Macfarlane.

Anna Nicole died in 2007 at just 39 years old of a combined drug intoxication. It was reported she has eight drugs in her system. Her funeral took place in March 2007 in the Bahamas.

“I really feel like she is telling her own story in her own words. And with the contributions of people in her life who genuinely knew her, I feel that we’ve been able to get closer to her truth,” Macfarlane said.

Anna was born Vickie Lynn Hogan and the documentary includes interviews with people who knew her before she grew to fame. The interview includes Missy, one of Anna Nicole’s oldest friends.

“Missy’s story offers insight into who Vickie/Anna was, and what she meant to the people who loved her,” according to Tudum.
