There are endless lists of what you need to pack for university, but what’s classed as essential may differ from uni to uni and city to city. These are the top five things that are definitely worth your money as a Liverpool uni student.

By investing in these, you’re guaranteed to make the most of uni without going broke.

The Raz

A staple for all Liverpool students, the Raz offers the cheapest night out in Liverpool. With £1 pints, shots and, of course, fat frogs, it’s hard to turn it down on a Monday night. Not to mention entry, which has unfortunately fallen victim to inflation and is now £4 instead of £3…

Have any relatives who used to study in Liverpool? The likelihood is that they’ve also been to the Blue Angel, and it’ll be almost the same as it was back then.

The club is a short walk from the Bombed Out Church, perfect for Freshers walking into town. Just remember to bring cash and your student ID: You can’t get in without them!

Clothes horse

A more practical suggestion: it’s definitely worth investing in a clothes horse to help cut the cost of Circuit Laundry. This is a great idea for Freshers or anyone living on campus. Some student houses in the Kensington and Smithdown areas do not come with a dryer, so if you find this out the hard way, it’s essential to invest in a clothes horse.

So, a clothes horse is a must to keep clothes, duvets and blankets clean without breaking the bank. That stench of damp is not worth it. Especially if it poses the risk of mold. Most retailers sell affordable options that work much better than Circuit dryers anyway.

A clothes horse will save you money and time dragging clothes down to the washing room.

Noise-cancelling headphones are absolutely essential for the days you spend rotting in the library. It might say ‘silent study,’ but there’s almost zero chance it’ll ever actually be silent. Ever.

Noise-cancelling headphones, or at least earplugs, will also come in clutch when your flatmates are hosting a pres and you’re having a night in. Or, if people are screaming outside the window and your student accom is too hot to close it. Orrrr if the classic Smithdown fireworks are being set off at ungodly hours.

Guild burrito

Perfect for lunch in between lectures, the Guild burrito is a cheap and delicious lunch. Priced at £6, it’s a great mid-week treat to get you through a slump. If burritos aren’t your thing, don’t worry; the Guild has lots of options to choose from: Nachos are a personal favourite.

It’s worth getting to the Courtyard just before 12 pm to beat the queues and avoid disappointment. Or, if you’re craving something sweet, Union Brew is just opposite. Here you can pick up a coffee, cake or matcha for a fraction of the price of Starbucks. 

The Mixr app

Another night out perk is the MiXR app. Used at pubs such as the Hope and Anchor and Brookhouse, MiXR offers £2 pints among other discounts. The more you spend, the more you save. Points add up to vouchers from £5 upwards.
