These 11 UK universities fell down more than 20 places in the Guardian’s rankings for 2027

The Guardian University Guide 2027 is out, and it demonstrates which of the UK’s universities are up-and-coming, and which may be declining. These 11 UK universities all plummeted down 2027’s league table, and ranked more then 20 positions lower than they did last year.

Goldsmiths, University of London

The uni dropped from 67th to 88th – that’s 21 spots. Goldsmiths received the eighth-worst score for graduate careers after 15 months out of the UK 123 universities in the Guardian’s rankings.

St Mary’s University, Twickenham

The ratio of students to staff has become worse. St Mary’s fell 21 places in the rankings, from 93rd to 114th.

University of Lincoln

Lincoln went down 22 places, from 64th to 86th. The university received a very underwhelming score of 75 out of 100 for graduate career prospects.

Aston University

The Birmingham-based university’s average entry tariff has dipped from 126 to 120. That means the uni is letting in people with fewer UCAS points. Aston University fell 23 places from 48th to 71st in the rankings.

Oxford Brookes

The student satisfaction score have actually increased, but less money is being spent on students. As a result, Oxford Brookes dropped 24 spots from 56th to 80th.

Coventry has fallen down the Guardian’s rankings for the second year in a row. In the league table for 2025, Coventry was 42nd. It plummeted to 70th in the 2026 league table, then to 96th in this year’s.

University of Kent

As of last month, this uni and the University of Greenwich are part of a “super-university” called the London and South East University Group. In the Guardian’s rankings, the University of Kent has fallen 27 places from 80th to 107th.

University of Aberdeen

Aberdeen’s students have grown less satisfied with their teaching and feedback, and this dragged the uni down 32 places from 18th to 50th.

Aberystwyth University

Aberystwyth University’s Old College

After falling 36 places, Aberystwyth Uni now ranks 98th instead of 62nd. The uni is spending less money on each student than it used to. The Guardian scored it 3.5 out of 10 for this last year, but only 2.9 this year.

University of Sunderland

Sunderland dropped 50 spots, from 27th to 73rd. The uni’s student satisfactions scored have decreased, and there are ratio of students to staff has grown worse. The uni now 15.8 students for each staff member,

University of Greater Manchester

This uni plummeted 65 places down the Guardian’s league tables, from 54th to 119th. That’s the biggest decline this year. The University of Greater Manchester received the second-worst score for dropout rates out of the whole league table.
