As well as the criminal case, there’s a lawsuit against Susan Lorincz – here’s what’s happening
It’s still ongoing
As told in The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix, we are all now familiar with the tragic story of what happened to Ajike “AJ” Owens. But one thing the Netflix film missed out was that there is a lawsuit against Susan Lorincz, as well as the criminal court case.
After months of hatred towards children in the local community, Susan Lorincz’s actions turned fatal. Ajike Owens was shot and killed by a single bullet that Lorincz had fired, through her closed and bolted front door. Susan Lorincz was later found guilty of manslaughter, and is currently serving 25 years in prison.
As well as the criminal trial against Susan Lorincz, there was also a lawsuit. In July 2025, more than two years after Owens died, her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Lorincz. Here are the details.

The lawsuit against Susan Lorincz is seeking at least $50k
According to WCJB News, the complaint was filed individually against Lorincz and Charles Gabbard, the landlord of the house where the shooting occurred. It was reported Owens’ family is “seeking at least $50,000 in damages.”
Any money the lawsuit may get, would go directly to Owens’ children. The lawsuit claims that it is down to Susan Lorincz’s gross negligence that Ajike Owens lost her life.
The damages are being sought due to “past and future mental pain and suffering” caused to Owens’ children, expenses of medical care and funeral costs arising from the death, and loss of inheritable estate.
