Forensic pathologist from Ajike Owens autopsy shares awful details of what happened to her
She wasn’t just shot in the shoulder, the bullet travelled through multiple vital organs
At the trial of Susan Lorincz, a forensic pathologist was called to give evidence, and she shared the exact autopsy results following the death of Ajike Owens.
Susan Lorincz shot and killed her neighbour, Ajike “AJ” Owens, who was a Black woman and mother-of-four. Ajike was killed by a single shot, fired through Lorincz’s closed and bolted front door. She was later sentenced to 25 years, for manslaughter. Her crimes are back being spoken about, as Netflix has released documentary film, The Perfect Neighbor. Lorincz is now serving her time at the Homestead Correctional Institution in South Florida.
Forensic pathologist Shanedelle Norford told the court how she has performed over 3,000 autopsies in her career, and is certified in her field – having undergone specific exams. She then shared what she found out, and the exact results from all the tests and examinations carried out during the autopsy of Ajike Owens. Some of the details below are graphic.

The pathologist revealed the exact state Ajike Owens’ body had been in when she reached the medical office
In court, Shanedelle was asked about the condition Ajike Owens’ body had been in when she was first seen by the medical office. She said there was clear evidence of medical treatment Ajike had received. “She had defibrillator pads on her chest, she also had intravenous catheter on one of her legs as well,” Shanedelle explained.
There were other injuries, as well as the gunshot wound

In court, it was revealed Ajike Owens had one other injury at the time of her death, as well as the gunshot wound to her shoulder. When asked if she had located an injury on the mother’s hand, Shanedelle said: “Yes. She had a superficial injury, what we call an abrasion, to the right hand.”
She told the jury the injury was “superficial” and “pink purple” in colour. She explained it was an injury to the skin, and nothing deeper. Shanedelle explained the injury was not consistent with a projectile, or graze. “As far as for what could have caused that injury, it could have been caused by several things,” she said, adding the injury was “fresh”. She continued: “Maybe her hand hitting the floor as she fell, or maybe something from the door, something hitting her.”
The gunshot was on the ‘right side of the chest’
The pathologist also went into detail about the gunshot wound that ultimately killed Ajike Owens. In the Netflix film it was stated AJ had been shot in the right shoulder, but the pathologist was more specific, describing the wound as being located on the “right side of the chest”.
The jury was shown photos of the wound. Shanedelle was asked to point to where the wound was on herself, and indicated above her breast, but below her shoulder.

There was an entrance wound but no exit wound, as an x-ray showed the projectile still in Ajike’s body. There was no soot or stippling found around the wound, which was in line with the gun being shot from a distance, and behind the front door.
She explained exactly what killed Ajike Owens
The court heard that the projectile – or bullet – had entered Ajike’s body, and then hit a rib. After this, it went through her right lung. It went through the heart, oesophagus, and then went though her diaphragm and spleen. It was actually recovered from her left, lower abdomen area.
The bullet didn’t enter and then leave her body – it travelled from right to left, and then downwards. To illustrate this to the jury, Shanedelle then pointed on her body where the bullet was actually found – in comparison to the entrance wound.

The cause of death was the gunshot wound, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide.
A toxicology test was also carried out
A toxicology test was completed, to look for any alcohol or substances in Ajike Owens’ body at her time of death. Hers was completely negative. No alcohol or drug traces, at all.
