The Perfect Neighbor: Susan Lorincz details her shocking crime in new interview from prison

‘I can’t take it back. I can’t replace her’

Netflix has just released The Perfect Neighbor, which tells the chilling story of Susan Lorincz. At the moment, Susan Lorincz is in prison serving time for her crimes.

The documentary film uses bodycam footage from dozens of police visits so the audience can witness as a tight-knit community navigated one neighbour’s relentless harassment. But, her hostility took a sinister turn when it escalated into a fatal crime.

Susan Lorincz was found guilty of the manslaughter of Ajike Owens. Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens was Susan’s neighbour, and the Black woman and mother-of-four was shot and killed by a single bullet. Susan Lorincz had fired the shot, through her closed front door.

The incident happened when Owens’ son told her Lorincz had thrown a rollerblade at him during an argument about where the neighbourhood children were allowed play. Owens had gone round to Susan Lorincz’s house to ask her about what happened, when Lorincz shot through the door.

Susan Lorincz was convicted in August 2024 and sentenced to 25 years in prison, in November 2024. She is now serving her time at the Homestead Correctional Institution in South Florida.

Susan Lorincz has since spoken out in an in interview from prison

During her trial, Lorincz’s defence team argued she was in fear for her life when she fired her gun. At the end of the trial, Lorincz was found guilty of manslaughter. She’s now spoken in an interview from prison.

Describing before the shooting, Lorincz said: “There were three boys, and they were very close to my sidewalk, and they had their skates around and stuff. I had fallen over a skate, and I said, ‘Guys pick up your skates,’ and they’re like, ‘No.’ And I said, ‘Kids, pick up your skates and please leave. You’re trespassing. You know you’re trespassing,’ and the kid said, ‘I’m going to kill you. If I can’t kill you, I’m going to find someone to kill you’.”

Lorincz then said she heard banging on her door, and thought it was the sheriff’s office, but it was Ajike Owens. “As soon as I said, ‘One minute,’ she went on the tirade, expletives and just horrible language, screaming at me, pounding on the door so hard,” Lorincz said. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ I’m like, ‘You need to leave. You’re trespassing. You were told not to come here by the sheriff’s department. You know, you’re trespassing. You need to leave.’ Then she said, ‘I’m gonna f*cking kill you.’ And I went, ‘Oh my God,’ and she’s pounding and she’s pounding and she’s pounding, and I just, you know, I was terrified.”

Lorincz claimed she “never saw the shot” because she was “so terrified”. She described herself “shaking and crying” because “it was horrible.”

When asked if she truly thought she was capable of killing someone, Lorincz added: “No. It just makes me sick. I just never, ever thought in a million years this would happen, and it just, it breaks my heart. I can’t take it back. I can’t replace her. I did an apology to the family, and I’m still so sorry.”
