Despite rising 15 places in the QS World University rankings, rising five places in the Complete University guide 2026, and being named Community University of the Year, the university did not fare as well in this new analysis.

In 2025, the University of York was ranked at 146th in the World, with an overall score of 62.1, dropping this year to 154th, with a score of 61.5. This also means that York has dropped out of the top 150 Universities in the THE World University rankings.

There are “five core pillars of evaluation” that the Times Higher Education look at when considering their ranking, which contribute to the overall score. Each of these areas is marked by a percentage of how much it impacts the overall score given to the university.

  • Teaching: 29.5 per cent
  • Research environment: 29 per cent
  • Research quality: 30 per cent
  • Industry: 4 per cent
  • International outlook: 7.5 per cent

Altogether, York has dropped between 0.3 and 3.1 in four of the five areas of evaluation, except Industry, which saw an increase of 0.8, contributing to its overall decrease in score of 0.6.

The University of York even had a decrease in International Outlook, despite its plans of setting up a campus in Mumbai, India. Despite this, the University of York saw a drop in their number of international students of 2 per cent, which could be due to the “increased visa restrictions” as stated by the BBC, on prospective international students.

While there are no statistics for York St John University, this year it achieved an overall score of 32.1-35.4, leaving it with a ranking between 1,001 and 1,200.

Moreover, the University of York and York St Johns both dropped places in the Guardian University Guide 2026.
