Inside wild lore of the secret grunge album Mariah Carey made and was banned from releasing

‘I wanted to break free, let loose and express my misery’

Those who don’t know very much think she only defrosts in December, because to them she is just the queen of Christmas. Those with taste know she is the greatest vocalist of all time – whose vocals are only rivalled by her insane ear for melody, pen that pumps out flames and her dab hand at producing nearly all her own songs. Mariah Carey is above it all and peerless in many ways, but she is still someone with secrets. One of the best of her secrets is the fact that Mimi recorded a secret grunge album in the 90s that she was banned from releasing – and now Mariah Carey is revealing more lore about it and with all these wild teasers we might FINALLY see it get a proper modern day release. It had been thought to be lost to time.

Sorry, what…

The album is called Someone’s Ugly Daughter and was initially released by a band called Chick. On lead vocals is a singer called Clarissa, who Mariah describes as a friend. Most of Mariah’s vocals remain in the backing layer. It was released in 1995 but is not on streaming or available to buy anymore. Some clips leaked in the early 2020s and Mariah discussed them at the time. She is believed to be credited on the album as “D. Sue”. Mysterious diva, dahhhhhling.

Speaking of the album in her memoir, Mariah Carey said “I’d bring my little alt-rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would record it immediately. It was irreverent, raw, and urgent, and the band got into it. I actually started to love some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character.”

“I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time,” she added. “You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angsty, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, while every move I made was so calculated and manicured.

“I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery – but I also wanted to laugh. I totally looked forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after Daydream each night.”

It’s too much.

It finally might be getting released

Whilst on the promo circuit for her new album Here For It All, Mariah has AGAIN been teasing the release of Someone’s Ugly Daughter. First, she played a few songs in discussion with SZA – who was wowing hard at Grungeriah Carey. But then on Jimmy Fallon this week, Mariah Carey discussed her secret grunge album more and a snippet of the track Prom Queen was played.

Mariah stated “I don’t know which record label this is owned by. I don’t think it’s any of them because it’s just the way that it went down. But let’s discuss…”

The absolute icon then said “I always regretted not putting it out, but they kind of stopped me at that point. It was Sony at the time. We love Sony now, but back then…a little controlling, a little controlling.”

By the power of all the lamb inside me, I pray we have the secret Mariah Carey grunge album in our clutches within the next year.
