The huge amount of singers who released music today before Taylor Swift’s album next week
Doja Cat, Mariah Carey and hundreds dropped new material just before Taylor Swift dominates charts next Friday
New Music Friday can be hit or miss, with a new release day usually having one or two big hitters releasing their latest single or album on the same day. Today, however, is a hit day to the level we are really used to. This is perhaps by chance, but more than likely it’s for one major reason. Next week, Taylor Swift drops her album The Life of a Showgirl. You do not have to be a music expert to know that releasing the same day as Taylor Swift these days is like having a commercial success death wish. When Taylor Swift releases 11 new songs, those 11 songs will not only shoot to the top of the chart but people will discuss nothing else. These are the artists releasing new music hoping to get out of the way of Taylor Swift.
Here is an exhaustive list of all the huge artists who released their music today before Taylor Swift drops her next culturally dominating album. And you honestly can’t blame them.
Doja Cat
Doja dropped her latest album Vie today. With only one single before the record came out and a quick turnaround – the album cover only got revealed this week – it felt like a speedy release schedule. It’s a banger record though.

Mariah Carey
Obviously long past her chart domination era, Mariah Carey I do not think released Here For It All – her first album in seven years – to light up the charts. She doesn’t need to, but it makes sense she still wouldn’t drop it the same week as Taylor.

Zara Larsson
Zara has seen some viral success with the title track of her latest album Midnight Sun – and a lot of acclaim and commercial conversation about how talented she really is this era. Not that she’d ever be a threat to Taylor Swift chart domination, it would be easy for a pop album to get forgotten about next to The Life of a Showgirl. And it deserves to be listened to, because it’s GREAT.

Olivia Dean
Olivia Dean is seeing a commercial rise she’s never had before – with three top 10 singles from this album era. It’s a gorgeous record so despite the fact there’s a lot out today, I think she could go number one in the UK next week. She could never have done that releasing same day as Taylor.
Perrie
After the huge success of Jade Thirlwall’s solo album two weeks back, it’s now Perrie’s turn. She’s not seen the same cultural juggernaut force Jade has had but she still obviously wants to do well – and there’s a lot of public love and sentiment for her. She couldn’t get a look in if it was next week.
Loads of major artist dropped singles too

There is an even bigger list of artists who’ve quickly put out singles to make sure they’re out of Taylor’s way when her lead single from The Life of a Showgirl inevitably hits number one. These include Tate McRae, FKA twigs, Magdalena Bay, Rita Ora, Ice Spice, Tame Impala, BANKS, Khalid and Florence and the Machine. Whew.
And a load of scrambling khias, too. What a week.
