Right, what do HB and HG actually mean? Here’s why they’re blowing up on TikTok right now

The acronyms are everywhere

New slang terms are popping up on TikTok all the time and this month, it’s HB and HG that have got everyone really confused.

It’s literally impossible to keep up with what all these abbreviations and weird phrases mean. There are just so many!

So, what do HB and HG mean? Here’s a full explanation, and why the acronyms are all over your TikTok right now in 2025.

Right, what does HB mean on TikTok?

HB literally just stands for “homeboy,” the popular slang term people use to refer to a very close friend who’s a guy.

Technically, it’s actually supposed to mean a close mate who’s from your hometown or local area, but people just use it for their closest pal.

So, what does HG mean on TikTok?

And as you’ve probably now worked out, HG means “homegirl,” which is used when you’re talking about a female friend.

The two slang terms are heavily associated with hip-hop culture in the US, which is where they originated.

Here’s why they’re everywhere right now

Homegirl and homeboy have been in people’s vocabulary for years, but HB and HG have gone viral on TikTok in 2025 as part of a new trend.

People are basically just making up funny scenarios with their homeboy or homegirl involved and adding a relevant sound in the background.

For example, one viral video says: “Me talking to my HG after I done wrong again (she told me this was gonna happen).”

“Watching all of my HGs’ exes and opps get taken down by the mafia I hired,” says another.

A third video adds: “When you gossip with your HB, but he gossips harder.”

Lots of the viral clips are also about situationships when homegirls and homeboys have turned into more than just friends. Awkward!
