Five things to you need to remember to get you through exam season at Birmingham Uni
Going to get my sage and crystals out for this one (help)
Whether you have exams, deadlines, or your diss is due, it can feel like the end of the world but, we will get through it together. The long days, and sometimes nights, in the library will soon be over, and then you can socialise without being internally screamed at for not spending all day at your laptop.
Whether the library has become your second home or you haven’t managed to get out of bed this week, here’s your reminder that things will all be okay in the end. Things have to get worse before they get better.
So here are five little things to keep in the back of your mind to get you through exam season. For when it all just gets a little bit too much.
1. Everyone is going through it – you’re not alone
It’s normal to feel like you’re so far behind everyone else, but trust me, you wont be the only one drowning in deadlines and revision notes that make no sense. Even the girlies who have a cute outfit on in the library are stressed, tired, and confused too.
Try to remind yourself how far you’ve come and how hard you’ve worked, or how hard you’ve manifested a good grade. And, if you still need a little more motivation, just remember that there is always someone that hasn’t even started the essay, or doesn’t even know when the exam is or what it’s even about. Keep going. You’re doing better than you think. Uni is difficult so don’t be too hard on yourself!
2. One unproductive day isn’t going to kill you
Most Read
We’ve all had bad days. It’ll be the day that you’ve made lunch to take so that you can stay in the library all day and be an academic queen but, sometimes things don’t go to plan. Don’t let one bad day erase all of your hard work.
You can stay sat watching Criminal Minds in the library, distracting everyone around you, or you can admit defeat and go back to the comfort of your own bed and doomscroll on TikTok until it’s dark. It’s probably better to take a break, refresh you’re brain and prevent a burnout anyway so. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, forget about it and try again tomorrow.
3. That post-exam pint will taste like liquid gold
NOTHING. I repeat. NOTHING. Is gonna top the first pint after you’re last exam. It will taste like freedom.
Whether your drink of choice is a Madri, a cheeky savvy b, a soda and lime or, my personal fave, a cold cider. Run, don’t walk to the Goose as soon as you finish and savour every sip. Use the thought of that pint as your motivation to get through your revision when you feel like quitting. It will all be worth it, trust me.
4. You’ve got through it before, you’ll do it again
You’ve survived the deadlines, all-nighters in the library, and the occasional academic breakdown but guess what? You made it out the other end and you will again this year. All you’re hard work will pay off eventually so keep going! At least at the end you’ll have about a thousand mirror selfies in the library bathroom in your camera roll to commemorate the dark times. Unless… if you’re in first year then I’m sorry to have to tell you this but the worst is still yet to come. #sorrynotsorry
5. Summer is right around the corner
Regardless of how your exam goes, the sun is still gonna shine (hopefully).
All the student summer rituals are waiting for you. Beer gardens, beach days and lazing around on the green heart, gazing up at Old Joe and soaking up the rays of British summertime.
After being cooped up in the library for weeks on end, the fresh air will do you some good and you might even forget about uni for a few weeks. You can go and enjoy some M&S picky bits in Cannon Hill Park and relax, it’s not long now! Good times are pending, you’ve just got to get through those exams and then you can enjoy your stress-free summer!
