Aspiring journalists: Applications for The Nottingham Tab’s 2025/26 editorial team are open

Applications are open until Monday 5th May at 2pm

Calling all aspiring student journalists in Nottingham. Your branch of The Tab is officially opening its applications for the upcoming year’s editorial team!

The current team are graduating and passing on the mantle to a new group of bright and keen students, ready to run the best student newspaper in Nottingham.

If you think you have what it takes to lead the team of writers and give thousands of monthly readers the updates that they need, keep reading.

Applications are open for almost all roles (our TikTok Editor is staying on): Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor and a Social Media Editor.

Journalism experience isn’t necessary but is always encouraged. Successful applications will receive training from The Tab HQ, but being on an editorial team is a serious commitment so make sure to consider how much you will bring to the team throughout the whole year.

Previous editors have also gone on to work for some huge publications like The Times, The Telegraph, Vogue, and the BBC.

Furthermore, The Tab HQ holds events in London, including a Christmas Curry and an Editors’ Dinner.

The only prerequisite for applying is that you’re a student at either university in Nottingham for the next academic year.

If you’re looking to apply, applications close on Monday 5th May at 2pm, but for now, here are the available roles.

Editor in Chief

Editor in Chief has the most responsibilities across the team. You oversee other editors and the contributing writers so that you can direct the publication.

You will be in charge of hosting weekly meetings, conversing with external groups (e.g. both Nottingham universities, SUs, and other organisations, depending on what stories are being written) and being the main point of contact with The Tab HQ.

On top of this, you will help with editing and writing a range of stories, and working with social editors to make sure digital content is posted regularly.

This role needs serious commitment, but is also really rewarding and looks great on your CV.

If you become Editor in Chief, you’ll be writing stories such as these:

You should have a keen eye for topical student news, such as student-led protests, breaking news, and events happening throughout the year.

You’ll be in charge of editing and publishing all news stories in a timely manner, with help from your Editor in Chief, if needed.

If you become News Editor, you’ll be writing stories such as these:

Features Editor

For Features Editor, we are looking for applicants with the ability to come up with witty, creative and opinionated articles for our audience of Nottingham students.

You will oversee and edit all features and guide articles for The Nottingham Tab, as well as bringing ideas to weekly meetings to commission writers.

An ideal Features Editor will be up to date with campus gossip and trends, creating niche and relatable content for our viewers.

If you become Features Editor, you’ll be writing stories such as these:

Social Media Editor

The Social Media Editor will have the responsibility to create posts and stories for our Instagram and Facebook. With over 30,000 followers between both sites, it’s important to post regularly to keep followers engaged and keep up our brand.

We pride ourselves on our great socials with weekly deliveries of memes and all updates about important articles. You must be clued up about the latest social media trends and be confident in front of the camera for video interviews.

Experience with Canva and other editing software is desired.
