This plot hole in Black Mirror’s USS Callister: Into Infinity actually ruins the whole episode

The new sequel forgets this major lore detail from the original

One of the biggest drawing points of the new season seven of Black Mirror on Netflix was the fact we were being blessed with the long awaited sequel to USS Callister – with this one dubbed Into Infinity. Loads of the returning cast came back for the feature length episode, and it’s honestly as good as the original. However, there is actually a major plot hole in the Black Mirror sequel to USS Callister, with this plot hole from the episode kind of derailing one of the major little gags from the story.

And once you’ve learned it, you won’t be able to unlearn it. Sorry to ruin the ep for you, but this plot hole is bad.

What happens in USS Callister: Into Infinity?

The sequel film to the original acclaimed Black Mirror episode focusses on Nanette Cole and her clone finding herself in the modded version of the game Infinity, themed around CTO Robert Daly’s love for a show called Space Fleet. In the sequel, Robert Daly is dead but Nanette and Walton the CEO of the company behind Infinity have to go back in the game when a reporter is sniffing around the company.

In the original USS Callister, the clone of Walton sacrificed himself in order to help the USS Callister gang escape from Robert Daly. But in the sequel, we learn that some of Walton’s DNA survived and he’s been living feral on a remote planet. This feral existence is interrupted by two versions of Nanette and the main Walton, and when they recruit him he grabs some of his possessions.

We see that the feral Walton clone has made a crude sex toy out of a rock with a face on it and a hole in the back. It’s a major gag in the sequel, but here’s why this USS Callister Black Mirror detail is actually a major plot hole.

A continuity error

In the original USS Callister, Robert Daly had removed all genitals from the clones of his real world staff. He was uncomfortable with sexual advances, and he wanted to keep it a family friendly universe. The Walton clone in the original explains “We’ve tried grinding our mounds together out of sheer boredom. No sensation at all.”

With this in mind, Walton shouldn’t have any genitals. It could be explained though by the fact he died in the first one and got regenerated so might not actually have to abide by the Robert Daly rules anymore.
