This Black Mirror theory about why she’s called Dorothy in Hotel Reverie will blow your mind
They really thought of everything
People think they’ve worked out why the actress is called Dorothy in the third episode of Black Mirror season seven, called Hotel Reverie, and it will truly blow your mind.
The episode is about Hollywood A-list actor Brandy Friday, who is thrown into an immersive high-tech remake of an old black and white romantic movie. She literally goes inside the film, and the entire thing comes to life.
Brandy meets the main character, a woman called Dorothy Chambers, and they end up falling in love after one of the camera guys spills his coffee on the futuristic technology and Clara gets stuck in the movie.
Now, back to why she’s called Dorothy. One TikTok user has revealed that “friend of Dorothy” is an LGBTQ+ slang term used to describe a gay man. It originated in the United States and was used when homosexuality was illegal.
“Friend of Dorothy,” often shortened to just “FOD,” was a way to discreetly identify someone as gay without actually outing them, which makes so much sense in context with the Black Mirror episode.

Hotel Reverie is set in the 1940s, when homosexuality was still illegal, and the episode follows the story of two lesbian women who fall in love without anyone else around them knowing.
“Gasped out loud when Dorothy’s montage happened. I suddenly connected the dots,” the TikTok user wrote in the caption – and it looks like the hidden messages go even deeper than that.
In the comments, someone else revealed that one of the first famous female directors in Hollywood was Dorothy Arzner, who was openly lesbian, so the character’s name could also be an ode to her.

Plus, people are also convinced that the name Clara is a reference to Clara Bow, an American actress who rose to fame in the 1920s and was believed to be bisexual.
Wow, Black Mirror really thought of everything!
