The final scene in Black Mirror’s Bête Noire episode is inspired by a very famous singer
It’s so iconic!
The second episode of Black Mirror, called Bête Noire, had everyone hooked, and the final scene was actually inspired by an iconic American singer.
Actress Siena Kelly, who plays Maria, has confirmed that the Empress of the Universe look at the end draws inspiration from none other than Beyoncé!
In the scene, Maria uses Verity’s futuristic necklace to alter reality and make herself the Empress of the Universe and everyone is bowing down to her.
She wears a tight dress and big headpiece, and the whole thing was inspired by the gold crown Beyoncé famously wore at the 2017 Grammys.
The look, which has gone down in history, was designed by House of Malakai and channeled Oshun, the African Goddess of fertility, beauty and love.
She wore it to sing two tracks from her album Lemonade, and it was the performance where she famously announced that she was pregnant with twins.

Speaking to HuffPost, the Black Mirror actress said Beyoncé is the real “Empress,” so it’s no wonder they took inspiration from her.
She said they tried to copy the makeup the singer wore at the awards ceremony, and the casting for the outfit took hours as they wanted to get it right.
Rosy McEwen, who plays Verity, added that the hair was even “called Beyoncé hair” in the wig room.

However, the show’s creator Charlie Brooker has revealed that it wasn’t always going to be Beyoncé.
“The original script proposed a slightly darker ending. Maria was written [to be wearing] almost fascist gear,” he told Netflix’s Tudum.

However, in the final version, the character takes on more of a pop-star look, and it definitely worked.
“It’s more Game of Thrones,” he said. “A little bit Beyoncé meets Khaleesi.”
