Um, how much does student accommodation usually cost? A rundown of the rents in uni cities

The rent for university accommodation varies so much between different UK cities. If you’re in the midst of picking  accommodation for university, and you’re worried you’re being let on, then here’s a rundown of the average rent for student accommodation in the UK’s most popular university cities. You can figure out how normal your accommodation is (or, you can despair that you should’ve picked a uni somewhere else).

The most expensive city in the UK for student accommodation is London, hands down. Although the costs vary by area, in East London the average is a truly eye-watering £520 per week. It’s not exactly a shock that many students at London unis live at home if they can, or in house shares.

After London, the spenniest places for student accommodation are Bristol (£332 per week) and Glasgow (£309 per week).

At the other end, the cheapest places to rent uni accom include Salford (at just £142 per week), Sheffield (£155 per week) and Coventry (£167 per week).

These figures all come from Student Crowd. When they calculate the average rent for each place, they take into account how many rooms for students in that place have shared bathrooms, or en-suites, or are studios, or apartments. This list includes the locations of all 24 universities in the Russell Group, as well as all unis with more then 25,000 students.

So, here is the average weekly rent of student accommodation in different university cities, arranged alphabetically to make your life easier:
