Girl whose Holocaust memorial photoshoot went viral says she thought photos were ‘beautiful’

A woman whose photoshoot at a holocaust memorial art installation went viral has apologised and explained the reason why she took the photos.

Over the past couple days on X, a screenshot of an Instagram post by @veramurrrrrr, whose  account is based in Lithuania, have been everywhere. The woman in the pictures is posing next to holocaust art memorial in Berlin.

“I beg your FINEST pardon,” said one tweet sharing the screenshots, which now has over 10 million views.

Another person added a bit more context to why this is so shocking, saying: “It’s such madness to do that, sorry? (Jewish Museum of Berlin, the faces make A LOT of noise when you walk on them in order to represent the screams of the dead during the Holocaust).”

Now, the Lithuanian-based woman has shared an apology and explanation on her Instagram Story.

“I want to clarify the situation regarding the photos I posted from the Jewish Museum,” the statement started.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect the photos to be seen this way or to cause such a strong reaction. I never intended to offend anyone or show any kind of disrespect toward the people whose lives and deaths are represented in the exhibition.”

She claimed that other people at the museum were also taking pictures and photography was allowed there.

“When I was at the museum, I saw many people taking photos, and I was also told that photography was allowed. I genuinely didn’t see my photos as some kind of ‘flex’ on such a tragic subject. To me, it was emotionally deep, and I wanted to capture the atmosphere through photos that I personally found beautiful. At the same time, now I understand that the photos could be perceived very differently from the way I intended them.”

She continued: “I also want to apologise for the way I responded to the situation yesterday! reacted quite harshly because I felt that some people were sending me unnecessary insults in my DMs and I dismissed their reactions as unnecessary dramatisation.”

The original Instagram post is now deleted, and comments are turned off on her profile.
