Leeds students turn flooded basement into ‘pool party’ in viral TikTok

The room is now ‘completely unliveable’

A group of Leeds students turned their flooded basement into a “pool party” in a viral TikTok.

The basement room of their Hyde Park house flooded overnight, prompting the students to retrieve a surfboard and film a TikTok of the incident.

The water flooded through a hole in a pump, which is located under the floorboards. On this occasion, the water rose around two inches overnight.

In the video, which now has over 278,000 views, a student can be seen attempting to balance on an inflatable surfboard on the water, while another student dances on a desk chair to Drunk in Love by Beyoncé.

Isobel, who posted the TikTok, told The Leeds Tab: “This is the second time the basement room has flooded. The first time wasn’t as bad, but the landlord said it was sorted the first time.”

Luckily, Isobel’s roommate had moved out of the basement before the flooding started, so the room wasn’t occupied at the time. Isobel said this is especially fortunate because the bedroom is now “completely unliveable”.

She added: “It’s such a stereotypical student house incident, but it’s easy for us to laugh about it because none of us are living down there!”

The problem has now been “sorted”, but the student admitted they lost their TV to the flooding. Compensation has been offered for the item, but the group is still awaiting details regarding any long-term plans for the damage.

Asked about the surfboard that seemed to be conveniently on hand, Isobel explained: “When we went down to check on the flood, my surfboard that I used for an Otley Run was floating in the water and my housemate hopped on as a joke.

“We just thought: ‘We have to make a TikTok of this for our friends’.”

Isobel admitted they weren’t expecting the video to go as viral as it has. She added that this is probably because “all students can relate to the student landlord cliche”.
