A comprehensive look at the insane number of Mario Kart World characters in game so far

The world has been playing Mario Kart 8 for 11 years, which is wild when you think about it. The game has transcended its original home of the WiiU to its main home as Deluxe on the Switch. There have been endless DLC packages, booster courses, new characters to race as. It felt like Nintendo had done it all, and no one had a clue where the company would take Mario Kart. Enter Mario Kart World for the upcoming Switch 2 – which is throwing all the rules out the window with an open world and so many characters that it’s literally overwhelming to keep a record of it. We don’t even know the full total of characters yet, but we do know there are at least 60 in Mario Kart World including some extra things eagle eyed racers have peeped.

Here’s a comprehensive rundown. They truly are just letting anyone get behind the wheel and drive in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Newcomers!?

Whilst there are some of the newcomers in the base roster list above, the full rundown of newbies as playable characters in Mario Kart World are:

And we’re not even done

Not just that, but that initial roster of 60 obviously as you can see does contain some costumes. But we’ve already seen other characters in costumes that aren’t listed there.

So far, we’ve seen a preview of seven for Mario – including ones that we’ve seen in the likes of Super Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart Tour previously. Luigi also has a similar number that we’ve seen glimpses of, and Peach. Smaller characters we’ve only seen a couple of outfits for them each.

It’s also unclear at this stage whether these outfits will all become choices in the character selection screen like some of them in that initial 60 or if they get picked up whilst driving around for some kind of perk – as in the Switch 2 direct we saw Mario morph into one outfit in the middle of driving.

All will assuringly be revealed when Mario Kart World gets its own direct in the next few weeks!
