Sheffield University wins fiery ice hockey contest to secure 11th consecutive Varsity title

University of Sheffield has secured its 11th consecutive Varsity title and taken victory in this year’s fiery ice hockey finale.

The Steel City’s two universities faced off in front of a sold-out Utilita Sheffield Arena tonight, with “Uni of” sweeping to a 5-2 win.

Hallam’s Oliver Keeling opened the scoring from close range – 15 minutes into the first period. University of Sheffield retaliated just before the break, with captain Josh Humphrey’s assist to Josh Fall bringing the sides level.

Fall then made it 2-1 with a 22nd minute goal, yet seconds later received a penalty alongside Hallam’s Tom Thomas and Matt Ryan amid a brawl which saw the former two players tackle each other to the ice – a typical aspect of the sport’s physicality demonstrated throughout the contest.

Back on the rink in the 26th minute, it was a dynamic pass from Ryan to Hallam number 18 Hamish Diedrichs that made it 2-2. However, that was no match for the University of Sheffield’s Sebastian Shillito weaving through the maroon jerseys to take a third just five minutes before the end of the second period.

The third period was all about the team in black and gold. Uni of doubled their lead as Josh Fall made it a hat trick, with Michael Szollosy firing the puck into the net to make it a 5-2 win in his final Varsity match.

Sheffield Bears veteran Szollosy – who received player of the match and a special tribute at full time – has played in 18 Varsity matches over the last two decades and tonight concluded his tenure with only his second win in black and gold.

Shortly before the final buzzer, another brawl broke out in front of the Hallam net. University of Sheffield’s Shillito received a match penalty after appearing to hit the back of a Hallam player’s head, while Fall received a major penalty and Hallam’s Lewis Miles was sent to the penalty box for misconduct.

A 5-2 win for the University of Sheffield added one final point to the overall 2025 Varsity scoreboard, concluding this year’s close competition with the University of Sheffield on 51 points and Sheffield Hallam University on 40.
