Katy Perry’s manager says it was his (bad) idea to have her working with Dr Luke again

‘The press didn’t react favourably and they tried to assassinate him and her’

We all remember where we were when Katy Perry released Woman’s World last year. It was supposed to be her big comeback, and the appetite was there. When people say the artwork for the single, we were ready. But the song was dead on arrival, with accusations of it sounding like AI kicking off as soon as she posted the first teaser. Worse still, people thought that teaser was AI fan made before realising it was actually the song and it was just that bad. Controversially, Katy Perry was working with Dr Luke again – who was responsible for producing a lot of her early hits but also has many vocal critics after Kesha accused him of sexual assault. Dr Luke has always denied all allegations, and the two reached a settlement in 2023 for the defamation lawsuit he brought. Now, Chris Anokute – the A&R manager for Katy Perry – has revealed it was he who pushed for Katy Perry to return to work with Dr Luke.

‘Luke is a dear friend’

Chris Anokute is the A&R manager for Katy Perry – which stands for artist and repertoire, if you’re unsure. Anokute recently appeared on The Managers Playbook where he spoke about the much maligned album 143, which is the worst critically received and commercially performing Katy Perry album in her entire career.

“I think there was some backlash on her reuniting with Dr. Luke, which was my desire,” Anokute said “[It was] my recommendation for her to get back into the studio with Luke because Luke is a dear friend. I thought it was a good time to reunite them after 10 years of not working together. Every single he’s ever done with her has gone number one. The press just didn’t react favorably and they basically tried to assassinate him and her.”
You can watch the interview in the video below – skip to one hour 30.

Anokute also “All the stuff he was accused of is actually not true”.

Anokute says “She’s always going to want to make music and I’m always going to be there to support her. I think the album [143] is fantastic. I think it has massive hits on it. We came out the gate a little shaky.

“We’re very excited about the record we made. She obviously put out amazing singles and videos and now she just launched a tour. And every tour date is selling out. Katy’s one of the biggest pop stars of all time and she’s done all this before the age of 35 years old. Every record isn’t going to be number one, every record isn’t going to be Teenage Dream or Dark Horse.”

As it stands, 143 received the worst critical reception of any album in 2024, and the lowest rated album of the entire 2020s on Metacritic.

When approached for comment on the subject of Katy Perry working with Dr Luke again by Rolling Stone, A&R manager Chris Anokute told the publication “You must be bored. God bless you.”
