Um, Katy Perry’s getting shot into space – here’s why she’s going and what’s on the agenda

I know it sounds like it but I’m literally not making this up

In one of the most bizarre pop culture bits of news this week, it’s been announced that Katy Perry will be going to space. Not because her album flopped on such a mortifying magnitude that she needs to escape Earth to hide from it, but for other reasons that seem quite random and unclear. The concept of Katy Perry in space is one that would put a Victorian child into a coma, so here’s what’s actually going on with it and why she’s being blasted out of orbit and what she’s going to do when she’s up there.

She’s on an all-female flight crew via Jeff Bezos

Katy Perry is getting blasted into space in an all female crew on the New Shepard, ran by Blue Origin. The New Shepard is owned by Jeff Bezos and is designed for space tourism, and she’ll be going out there as part of Lauren Sanchez – Bezos’ fiancee – and her all female crew. Also joining her are Gayle King from the telly, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and Kerrianne Flynn – a film producer.

In response to the announcement, Katy Perry said on Instagram “If you told me that I would be part of the first all-female crew in space I would have believed you.

“Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child. Although we didn’t grow up with much, I never stopped looking at the world with hopeful WONDER! I work hard to live my life that way still, and I am motivated more than ever to be an example for my daughter that women should take up space (pun intended). That’s why this opportunity is so incredible — so that I can show all of the youngest & most vulnerable among us to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively. I am honored to be among this diverse group of celestial sisters.”

What does a flight on the New Shepard look like?

Not to say going to space is anticlimactic, but the entire trip lasts 11-12 minutes. That’s it. The passengers will go out of the earth’s orbit into space and experience same weightlessness and they’ll be able to see the vastness of space and Earth’s place in it. It doesn’t sound like a long time but it’s enough time for Katy Perry to belt out ET at the top of her lungs.

The flight is autonomous so no pilots, and it lands via parachute. The New Shepard goes right out to the Karman Line – which is recognised as the edge of space.

Lauren Sanchez has been planning the all-female crew since 2023 and is being credited for putting it together. She says in a press release she’s “honoured to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”

The flight is set to happen some time in spring of this year. I will be watching.
