Mother of murdered schoolgirl Ava White speaks out about Netflix’s Adolescence
She’s glad the show is drawing attention to ‘bad influencers’
The mother of Ava White has spoken out about the new Netflix show Adolescence.
Ava White was sadly killed aged 12 by a 14-year-old boy in 2021, after a row about a Snapchat video.
Netflix’s show Adolescence tells the fictional story of a 13-year-old boy who engages with online incel communities, then is arrested for killing a girl from his school.
Leeann White said she doesn’t like how some people have directly compared the characters in Adolescence to her daughter’s case. She told BBC Radio Merseyside: “It’s got nothing to do with Ava whatsoever. It makes me really angry as well that Ava’s name keeps on getting put alongside – it’s about the perpetrator, it’s not about Ava.”
She felt she had to see the Netflix show because her daughter kept being mentioned alongside it. Leeann found the series “really difficult” to watch. She said she could not find Ava White’s name in any public interviews with Adolescence’s creators, Stephen Graham or Jack Thorne.
Leeann White did also praise the makers of Adolescence for drawing attention to the impact areas of the internet can have on young people. She said: “By them highlighting all the dangers on social media and all the bad influencers like Andrew Tate… I think that’s a really good thing for them to be highlighting.”
