Ugh, Love Is Blind’s ‘Brokeback’ Dave hits back at gay rumours in his most nefarious moment yet

Love Is Blind’s Dave Bettenburg has addressed the rumours he’s secretly gay, and even alongside his most triggering statements on the show, this might be his worst moment yet.

Dave’s mistreatment of Lauren O’Brien has been a major talking point in Love Is Blind season eight alongside his mysterious sister, Ben’s TikTok allegations, and Mason and Meg secretly still being together. Dave has somewhat addressed the controversy surrounding him, albeit digging himself into a deeper hole, but he’s been relatively quiet on Instagram after suggesting he was taking a break away from the internet.

Earlier this week I defended Dave in an article on the gay rumours that are prevalent on both Reddit and Twitter. However, after seeing David’s own response, I’m now promptly retracting my defence because this man does not know when to zip it.

People on Twitter and Reddit have been explaining Dave’s objectively awful behaviour by suggesting that he might be secretly gay and looking for a lavender marriage. They are all over multiple social sites, and Dave has obviously noticed.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Dave posted three separate pictures to address the speculation he might be gay. The first, a photographer picture with him in a cowboy hat and standing next to a horse, was a nod to the classic gay film Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger (rest in peace, king).

The second was Dave standing in a bar while wearing a Harry Styles t-shirt and a fur gilet but where he got the nasty jacket from is still unknown. The third and final picture was a selfie in a bathroom while wearing a One Direction t-shirt and sunglasses.

“Brokeback Dave #mightbegay #comments #CousinTim. @onedirection @harrystyles. #onedirection #harrystyles,” he captioned the post.

I have no issues with someone poking fun at rumours about them, even on topics as sensitive as this one, but Dave’s post seemed like a cheap shot with queer people at the butt of the joke. It was as if he was mockingly confirming speculation by posing in what he deemed stereotypically gay outfits. Sure, some of us love Harry Styles, but he’s always been more of a straight-woman crush and even then his reference is a little dated. If you’re going to be shady, at least be current.

Dave had the opportunity to save back some of his ragged reputation by addressing the rumours with grace, but the “#mightbegay” really hammered home his point: He really doesn’t care if he’s liked or not.

God knows what #cousinTim means

I understand hashtagging Harry Styles and One Direction, but despite my best efforts, I could not work out what “#CousinTim” meant. Googling it threw up some pretty sketchy results, from a ditched Gravity Falls character to it being an acronym for Trans-identified male. Naturally, I turned to the good folks on Reddit for some assistance and it was here that I learned Dave was self-referencing an old picture.

You see when the gay rumours initially started to swirl, people were using one of Dave’s own pictures as so-called proof. It showed him lounging on a boat shirtless alongside another man who Dave identified as his cousin Tim in the caption.

“Hey ladies he’s single, or maybe I’ll just date him. Happy 30th cousin Tim,” he said.

First his sister and now poor cousin Tim.
