Netflix tried to get them to take part in the doc
The Netflix documentary about Gabby Petito mentions the parents of Brian Laundrie, and how they became involved in the case. So, a lot of people are wanting an update on where they are now.
Brian and his fiancée Gabby had been on a road trip together across the US. The trip was planned to last for four months, beginning in July 2021. But, Gabby Petito disappeared in August. Her family reported her as missing in September, after having not heard from her in weeks. Gabby was discovered dead on September 19th. It’s believed Brian Laundrie had strangled her around the date of August 28th.
Following this, Brian Laundrie drove home alone to the house where is parents, Christopher and Roberta, lived. A manhunt for Brian began, and when officers came to the home of his mum and dad, they refused to cooperate. Instead, they pointed police in the direction of their attorney.
As the investigation continued, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie still refused to cooperate. On the day it is believed Gabby died, Brian called his mum for an hour, and his dad reached out to a lawyer. It was widely believed the couple withheld information about their son.
In police body cam footage showed in the Netflix series, Christopher and Roberta were seen standing in their doorway. Christopher said: “I’m not talking to anybody. Brian is here, that’s all I’m going to say for now. We have an attorney.” He told police he could pass over that number to them.

In 2022, Gabby’s parents, Nichole Schmidt and Joe Petito, filed a civil lawsuit against the Laundries. They claimed they knew about Gabby’s death and Brian’s involvement. Two years on, in February 2024, it was reported Gabby’s parents had settled the lawsuit. Details of this are confidential. The Laundries have never been charged with a crime.
In summer 2024, Gabby’s mother said she had found it in her heart to forgive Brian. However, she said she could never forgive Roberta. Speaking at CrimeCon, she said: “As for you, Roberta, and I call you out individually because you are evidently the mastermind that shattered your family and mine with your evil ways. I see no empathy in your eyes.
“No remorse in your heart and no willingness to take responsibility for your actions. You are the dark. You are the sociopath that everyone fears. The one who appears so innocent and kind, but harbours darkness within your soul. You do not deserve forgiveness. You deserve to be forgotten and dehumanised. You epitomise pure evil.”

The couple are believed to still live in Newport, Florida. In 2024 they were pictured on their driveway, and Brian’s car was still parked there. They have tried to stay as out of the public eye as possible, and didn’t take part in the Netflix doc.
“We did reach out to his family,” creators of the show told US Weekly. “It’s hard to open up about this [topic] for that side of the family. So we made best efforts to reach out to them. We reached out to the family, to their lawyer and to Brian’s sister. But we respected the fact that they didn’t want to participate and that’s it.”
