Five York campus wellbeing spaces to take advantage of in 2025
Keep calm and get that degree x
As we step into 2025, it’s time to prioritise wellbeing. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape, a place to connect with friends, or somewhere to crush your academic goals, we’ve got you covered. Here are five campus spots to help you thrive this year.
1. College hubs
College hubs are at the heart of campus life and provide a welcoming environment for all college members, regardless of whether you live on or off campus. Each hub has unique features but all have communal areas like common rooms, equipped with cosy seating and games to help you unwind after a busy day. These hubs are also perfect for meeting up with friends, hosting study sessions, or taking a moment for yourself.
Developed last summer, the Goodricke College Nucleus has a sensory room, a space designed to support students with additional needs, although it is open to all students from all colleges. The room offers a calming environment with soft lighting, sensory equipment and comfortable seating, providing a quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of university life.
2. University gyms
If hitting the gym is part of your 2025 resolutions, York’s sport facilities are here to help. The York Sports Village and York Sports Centre offer state-of-the-art facilities and there are a range of classes available to keep you motivated. Whether you’re lifting weights, swimming, or trying yoga for the first time, these gyms make fitness accessible and fun.
3. The Library

Dreaming of becoming an academic weapon? The library is your place. With late night access, multiple study zones and group workspaces, it’s got everything you need to tackle essays, revision, or that last-minute panic before deadlines. Whether you’re vibing in the silent study zones or grabbing a snack from the cafe between sessions, the library makes hitting the books as painless as possible.
4. Food and drink spots
From grabbing a quick coffee to enjoying drinks with friends, campus food and drink outlets cater to all tastes. The Link in Church Lane stands out with its unique menu, featuring bao buns, savoury bubble waffles, and gyozas alongside Starbucks coffee. Its comfy and open seating area makes it a great place to unwind or meet up with friends between lectures.
For something more casual, try Cookies in the Biology building for hot drinks and a quick bite to eat, or head to The Courtyard, The Lounge or The Glasshouse for relaxed vibes and affordable drinks. These spots are perfect for recharging and catching up with friends.
5. Green and outdoor spaces
Take a break from your screens and breathe in the fresh air. Spend some time taking in the view from Greg’s Place – it’s right next to Central Hall, offering a stunning view of the lake. Whether you’re catching up with friends, soaking up the sun, or just enjoying the peaceful surroundings, it’s the perfect spot to recharge.
For more outdoor escapes, the grassy areas near Heslington Church and Derwent College are ideal for picnics or study breaks. On Campus East, the lakes provide the perfect backdrop for reflection or casual strolls. Feeling adventurous? Follow the York Solar System Model trail, which weaves through campus and leads you all the way into the city centre.
As an added bonus, keep an eye out for baby bunnies hopping around – they’ll give you all of the serotonin you need to brighten your day!
These five spaces are more than just locations, they’re opportunities to enhance your university experience. Whether you’re looking to connect with others, focus on your fitness, or simply take a moment to breathe, there’s something on campus for everyone. So why not explore them all in 2025? Your mind and body will thank you, especially with all the incoming academic stress this semester!
