For Americans like Simone, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee awards its athletes $37,500 for gold medals, $22,500 for silver, and $15,000 for bronze. You don’t get anything if you don’t medal.

So when Simine won a silver and bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, she also took home $37,500 in medal bonuses. And back in 2016, when Simone won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, she earned $110,000 in medal bonuses. At the time, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee paid out just $25,000 for golds, $15,000 for silvers, and $10,000 for bronzes.
