A new light show is coming to the York Minster this Saturday to commemorate 40 years since the fire that devastated the historic monument.

The Phoenix light show is raising funds for the restoration and maintenance of the Minster that normally costs around £2 million a year. The show only costs £7.50 to watch, which is cheaper than a normal entry.

The fire in 1984 shocked the locally community, as well as globally. The message of the lightshow focuses on the community that came together the days that followed the fire. It showed the brave fireman that helped extinguish the fire and the community that offered their time, money and even supplies to help restore it.

The images were beautifully done, accompanied by music and clips from the days following. The most poignant moment was when a phoenix rose from the fire ashes and flew across the historic ceiling, representing the hope that followed after the devastation.

We spoke to Fundraising Assistant Ruby Burling, who is also studying her Masters at the Uni of York. She stated how amazing this event is for students, that want to do something different than the useful pub crawls and Wednesday nights out.

It is perfect for sober events or a cute, wholesome day trip with your flat. She stated her regret of not exploring the Minster and York’s rich history during her undergraduate and would say this is the perfect event to do so.

Ruby Burling compared the significance of the misters fire to York students as they both make up integral parts of York’s character. She also compared the fire at York Minster to the fire of Notre Dame in 2019 in significance to the community. She emphasised visiting is the perfect autumn activity, especially if you’re interested in history or graphic design.

The show starts Saturday 19th October and carry through until 2nd November.
