Looking back: The 10 best and worst products in the YUSU shop

You couldn’t even give some of these away

Everyone's heard by now the very upsetting news that the YUSU shop is closing down. I'm crying, you're crying, but it's all going to be okay.

It's been integral to many people's stationery shopping, York merch needs and lunchtime meal deals, and it will be remembered fondly.

However, I'm sure you've noticed the shop has stocked some great and some questionable items. It seems that now is an appropriate time to look back at the ten best and worst products stocked in our beloved YUSU shop.

1. Posh crisps in the meal deal

Kettle chips 4eva

Nisa's meal deal is notoriously pretty shit. The only crisps they deem acceptable to include are Walkers, whereas YUSU include the mighty Kettle Chip in their far superior selection.

It all started when Sainsbury's removed the 'taste the difference' sandwiches from their meal deal. The quality of the meal deal has been on the decline ever since. However, trusty old YUSU never dared to remove the luxury crisps from theirs because they look out for us all. Thanks YUSU.

2. This lovely bag

Have you actually seen the size of this bag

Displayed here is a perfect cross-breed of a laptop bag and the bag your mum made you carry in Year 7. The gorgeous colour scheme is a mix hot pink and jet black, blazoned with the wonderful University of York logo.

Our university merch clearly leaves much to be desired. This is the bag equivalent of Marmite, it might be one of the best or worst items YUSU has to offer. I will let you decide.

3. The great and varied range of paper

So. Many. Options.

Don't lie, how long have you spent here deciding which paper to get? Doing a cost-benefit analysis debating whether to get the cheapest, the thickest, A4 or A5, the one with the uni logo on it, the narrow ruled or the huge project book. But then just going for the lavender one because it is pretty and will make your notes look nice.

I can admit I have spent way too long doing this. The range and low prices of YUSU's paper department will be sorely missed for all us keen stationary fans out there.

4. I'm not even sure what this is

What is its use?

A small neoprene hand bag with a menacing owl on it? Damn I wish I had one. Although considering this is York University, a hissing goose would probably have been more appropriate.

5. More things with owls on

If you have ever received a gift with owls that kinda look pissed off, it was probably bought last minute from YUSU.

6. These highlighters and pens are life savers

The low-priced highlighters were the best. Look at that enchanting selection of colours, the gorgeous layout, it's enough to make a grown man cry. Another example of YUSU proving that Rymans can eat their heart out when it comes to stationary.

7. These beautiful fine liners

So dreamy

YUSU will go down in history for having the best stationery solutions. If you want a plain black biro, head to Nisa.

8. A scooter

Is this selling a scooter, or a lifestyle?

Some people rock the scooter thing. However, more often than not people on scooters look like knob heads.

I find it more bizarre however, that YUSU thought this would be an appropriate item to stock. I can't imagine many people spontaneously buying a scooter in YUSU, regardless of the potential Yoyo points to be gained.

But, I may be mistaken in my judgement, after all it is "more than just a scooter"…

9. The animals with headwear riding on pieces of fruit collection

Image may contain: Wildlife, Mammal, Giraffe, Animal

I suppose this might align with someone's interests. Anyone? Anyone at all?

10. Things with pictures of people you don't know on

Image may contain: Cup, Coffee Cup, Person, People, Human

I like the woman on the miniture hipflask looking at you disapprovingly

Best or worse? I don't know. But I can imagine receiving one of these and asking "so is the person pulling a slightly uncomfortable smile on this mug famous?" The most appropriate response is clearly "no, I just thought you'd want to look at group of people looking a bit constipated every morning while you drink your coffee".

Whether you love or hate all that the YUSU shop has to offer, you can't deny it has been a beacon of hope for fans of highlighters, meal deals and owl enthusiasts, and for that it shall be sorely missed. RIP YUSU shop, forever in our hearts.
