Sheffield Uni men’s hockey team banned from Varsity after student brags of sex with SU officer

They broke the code of conduct

| UPDATED

One of Sheffield University’s top sports teams are banned from Varsity and embroiled in a sex scandal with the SU, The Tab Sheffield can reveal.

The elite men’s first team of University of Sheffield Hockey Club (SUHC) have been disqualified from the signature annual clash between Uni of and Hallam universities due to their behaviour.

The club prides itself on being the largest sports group at the institution with seven men’s teams and four women’s teams.

But no black and gold will be seen at the Men’s 1's hockey in 2020, after the university banned every member because they got drunk on a team bus while travelling back from a game.

Their behaviour was deemed a breach of the university student code of conduct.

It comes as the club, which has four sides that compete nationally in BUCS matches, is engulfed in a second scandal after a member bragged about sex with a Sheffield Students' Union officer.

A men’s first team member sparked outrage with a recent Facebook post openly naming the current SU officer they had sex with. The Tab Sheffield has decided not to name the officer to respect anonymity.

It is understood that the post was made in a private SUHC Facebook group that has more than 100 members. The SU officer is receiving support from the university.

The institution confirmed the post was made and did not deny that the student is facing a disciplinary investigation.

A University of Sheffield spokesperson said: “The men’s first hockey team have been withdrawn from one fixture of the Varsity 2020 competition, this is following a breach of the University of Sheffield’s Student Code of Conduct in relation to team members drinking alcohol whilst on transport from another fixture.

“Sport Sheffield is actively working with all University sports teams to ensure they are supported in understanding the Code of Conduct and that we actively foster a culture that promotes the highest standards of behaviour.”

Last year Hallam won Men’s 1's Varsity hockey, but Uni of were the overall victors at 45.5 points to 32.5. This year's contest is set to take place at venues across Sheffield in March.

In 2018 a Medics Rugby player was banned from Sheffield SU for punching then development officer Megan McGrath, one of several members in charge of student safety on SU nights out. The Tab Sheffield understands her attacker had his ban lifted this autumn.

Sheffield SU declined to comment, saying it was a university matter. The hockey club did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
