Peckish between lectures? Here’s a list of the best places to be!

The University of Nottingham is highly commended for its quality of education, beautiful campus and spectacular accommodation but we don’t talk nearly enough about one of University Park’s best and most hidden assets – the food! Uni Park is packed full of a variety of eateries all over campus and there is most certainly something for everyone.

It’s sometimes hard to know exactly where to go for lunch on those particularly long days slaving away in George Green, so we’ve put together a comprehensive guide of all the best coffee shops, pop ups and chain stores for the next time you’re not sure what you fancy. So, here is your concise guide of the best places to eat on campus:

Portland Coffee Co.

Whilst the coffee in the Student Union’s very own coffee shop is top tier, I would argue that the food here is even better. Perfect for a bite to eat between lectures but bear in mind it does get quite busy around lunchtime – although the queue moves very fast. The staff are all really friendly and the food always tastes super fresh. There are also great options for the vegans and vegetarians among us.

Mooch

Mooch is most well-known for a post society pint, but the food quality is not to be overlooked! There’s a great variety of filling meals that are very affordable for the student budget. The service is fast and the food is brought directly to your table so no awkward waiting around at the bar. The atmosphere in Mooch is always an added bonus as well as the option of an alcoholic drink if you want one and the occasional live music act in the evening.

Mama’s Pizza

Mama’s pizza is my personal favourite lunch spot on campus. With the choice of pizza or mac and cheese, there is something for everyone. They have a range of pizzas, including a vegetarian option, although I wouldn’t personally recommend it for the vegans. The only downside is the very popular garlic or chilli dough balls have been taken off the menu.

Costa Coffee

Costa is located on the ground floor of the Portland building, outside by the stairs. This well-known coffee shop serves all the coffee classics as well as a range or baguettes, sandwiches and toasties. The only problem is the limited seating, but why not take your food and enjoy it on the beautiful Portland steps?

Saijokai Pan Asia

This hidden spot is worth it just for the aesthetic. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the food is somehow even more beautiful. The portions are very large and the prices are very reasonable – ideal for the student budget. The service is always fast and there are plenty of tables so you will never be stuck for somewhere to sit.

Subway

How can you go wrong with a classic Subway? So many options to choose from and some great meat alternatives for the veggies. Subway is clearly the place to go for a quick but filling meal and so sometimes the queues can be very lengthy. Make sure to bear this in mind if you’re in a hurry.

Hallward Café

Grabbing a quick bite in the library is perfect for those days where you can’t afford to stop the grind. There is a large selection of both hot and cold foods and it is very reasonably priced, although perhaps a place to avoid during deadline season as it gets very busy.
