Nottingham firefighters still at scene of Dunkirk blaze

Over 100 firefighters were at the scene last night

Over 100 firefighters arrived at the scene of the blaze in Dunkirk last night.

Many still remain at the scene, with fumes from the scrap pile still rising this morning.

It has now emerged that the source of the fire is the scrapyard behind campus, in the student area of Dunkirk.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles around, with reports and images shared on social media from campus, Dunkirk and Lenton.

Witnesses described ‘explosions’ that could be heard as fire raged.

Speaking to the Nottinghamshire Live, Fire Chief Damien West states that he and other firefighters have been “working tirelessly throughout the night.” Work has continued onto this morning, and he anticipates that they will stay at the scene all day, with the potential need to return on Saturday, too.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but there is “nothing to suggest that it was malicious.”

Although the severity of the fire is apparent, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities, and the situation is now under control.
