Safety First?

Jess Howard argues that the changes to the LCR are absolutely for our benefit.

Providing you’ve managed a break from all night study sessions and library binges, you’ll have noticed a few changes in our dear LCR. Missing burger vans, smaller smoking areas – students have been in uproar. But, fear not, it’s all been in aid of a good cause.

No burger van? No worries!

Safety, safety, safety was the general vibe from the Union. Following a series of incidences last semester the Union are looking out for us, not just trying to rile us by taking away our post- A list burger. Although let’s face it, removing cheese covered temptation is probably a lot better than we’ll ever admit.

A student survey revealed that people felt unsafe huddled in big groups post club night. By moving the food offerings to the street, people will hopefully move away a bit quicker and lessen the chances of drunken tiffs between jaegerbomb filled housemates. On the subject of waiting it seems they’re keen to get us all in a bit faster at the start of the night. From next Saturday there will be a fast track entrance for people who have already bought their tickets. Because of course we needed another excuse for £1.50 pre-drinks in the red and blue bar.

While we’re on entry – we’ve all heard about the changes to who is and isn’t allowed in. Students, alumni and staff only for the foreseeable future, but there is one loop hole. Guests, two each, so you can still show off our wonderful campus club to friends from back home.

The last change can be seen in the smoking area – slightly smaller than it has been in the past. This one really is for safety, after a student was seen to be attacked by a non LCR attender. Admittedly it removes the opportunity for a grope in the square, but you have to admit it’s a better option than risking those steps in heels.

Throughout everything the general consensus is safety and a good night out for students. Small changes to ensure we all have a good and safe night out, even after a few hundred trips to the Relentless bar.
