Footage from University CCTV showed 23-year-old Bao Weng carrying an air rifle on campus in the early hours of February 19.

Weng, a full time student studying for a masters, appeared at Lincoln Magistrates on Thursday.

He was found walking around by the engineering building at 12.45am with the unloaded weapon over his shoulder, before he then carried it across his body at waist height with both hands, the court heard.

When security staff approached the student, he initially told them it was a fishing rod. However, when opening the case they discovered the 1.2m rifle.

Weng had apparently gone to see two friends that were interested in buying the rifle from him. As he was cycling the air rifle case had fallen off his bike, causing the weapon to fall from its case.

Two people walked past the incident but were unaware of the fellow student’s possession, despite security officers telling them to get out of the way.

Weng was fined £100, ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £20.

The court also ordered that the rifle would be destroyed.
