Here’s how Lancaster Uni will celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month 2024

We’ve collaborated with the SU’s LGBTQ+ Officer to bring you everything you need to know

Today marks the first day of LGBTQ+ History Month for 2024, and this year we’ve collaborated with the SU to tell you everything you need to know about how the university is celebrating this year.

LGBTQ+ History Month was started in 2004, and first celebrated in 2005 to claim our past, present and future, following the repeal of Section 28. It’s a great chance to reflect on and celebrate how things have improved, and the work we still have yet to do. Every year, Lancaster University puts on events and has a theme (this year it’s “Medicine”).

Events

5th, 12th, 19th, 26th February (6-8pm) – LGBTQ+ Forum weekly coffees.

2nd February (8-11pm) – Grizedale-Sugar social, Grizedale Bar.

5th February (6-8pm) – Banner making for trans protest, LGBTQ+ forum coffee evening.

7th February (1pm) – Trans protest, Alexandra Square.

8th February (4pm)- Inclusion pledge, location TBC.

18th February (7pm) -Take2 film- Bottoms (collab with Bailrigg FM).

23rd February (12-3pm) – Cake Crawl, town.

Campaigns

The first campaign this year will be the flags campaign, where each bar on campus will feature an LGBTQ+ flag and poster explaining its meaning and significance!

As part of the rainbow laces campaign, rainbow laces will be available for purchase from the SU. All proceeds will be used for supporting LGBTQ+ people either through SU support or a charity.

Bailrigg FM x Lancaster LGBTQ+ collab

Every Wednesday at 2pm from 31st January- 28th February, Bailrigg FM will have a show on History Month. The topics will centre around what History Month is, queer intersectionality, queer music and culture and a Gaylrigg FM. The crew will also cover Lancaster’s queer history, and they’ll talk about being LGBTQ+ at the station.
